About the place
The island's highest mountain, about 630 metres. From the top you see the north coast (Chaloklum, Malibu, Mae Haad with Koh Ma) and, on a clear day, Koh Tao; Samui opens up on the way.
The trail is about 3 km of jungle, 2–3 hours up. It passes a reservoir, the last kilometre is steep, close to scrambling in places, and the markings are sparse. A guide is not required, but do not go alone.
Getting there
The trail starts in Maduea Wan, at Khao Ra Bungalows: about 6 km from Thong Sala pier on the Chaloklum road, past the turn to Phaeng Waterfall and Wat Maduea Wan. A small trail fee is collected at the start.
Good to know
- Allow half a day: 2–3 hours up and about an hour down
- On a cloudy day there is no point: the top is in cloud and there is no view
- Shoes with a good grip and plenty of water: the last kilometre is nearly a scramble
