Tide today
Waist-deep on the coconut. The water is going out: low tide at 20:47.
Today: low tide at 20:47, high tide at 12:26.
UV index 1: low. The harsh sun is behind: the sand is fine.
The tide here
Swim at high tide: then the water is over your head 15–20 m out, and the sandbar has water on both sides like a tiny desert island. At low tide the water goes far out, stomach-deep at most, and swimming is all but impossible; the sandbar is an easy walk, though.
About the beach
The name for the stretch of Chaloklum's beach in front of Malibu Beach Bungalows, on the west side of the village by the 7-Eleven. The sand is among the whitest and finest on the island, like flour. The bay is sheltered, with hardly any waves, and no snorkelling either: shallow, no reef.
A big sandbar lies at the end of the beach. On the shore: Malibu Beach Bungalows with a restaurant and bar, a volleyball net, a few restaurants, and the village's cafes a short walk away. Trees give shade.
Getting there
About 11 km from Thong Sala on the paved road to Chaloklum, 15–40 minutes. Parking is free: scooters behind the 7-Eleven and by the beach, cars on the main road. You reach the sand through Malibu's grounds.
Good to know
- Check the tide before you go: everything here depends on it
- Sandflies, worst by the sandbar and fewer to the east: bring repellent
- From late November to mid-January a north-easterly blows into the bay: kitesurfing season
