About the place
A roadside spot on the Chaloklum road in Ban Maduea Wan where a troop of wild macaques gathers on overhead wires, trees, and roadside fences almost every morning and late afternoon. A familiar landmark for island residents and a great place to observe wild monkeys without visiting commercial animal attractions.
Getting there
Along Highway 4131 from Thong Sala toward Chaloklum, ~5 km north of town in Ban Maduea Wan, about a kilometre before the Chinese Temple turnoff. Look for macaques on the utility cables overhead.
Good to know
- Best time to see them is morning (8:00–10:00) or late afternoon (16:30–18:00)
- Do not feed them processed food or snacks: macaques are wild and can become aggressive
- Keep phones, sunglasses and food securely tucked away; don't leave bags in scooter baskets
- Slow down: juveniles occasionally dart across the road unexpectedly
