Tide today
Knee-deep on the coconut. The water is going out: low tide at 20:47.
Today: low tide at 20:47, high tide at 12:26.
The tide here
At low tide it is too shallow here to swim properly or snorkel over the inner reef: rocks and coral come out of the water. Come at or near high tide, when the water covers the uneven bottom and getting in is easier.
About the beach
A small beach at the eastern end of Chaloklum bay, about two kilometres from the village. It is also called Coral Bay, after the resort, and Coconut Beach. Quiet, often almost empty, with plenty of shade from palms and casuarinas. A few bungalow resorts with restaurants and bars stand on the shore; there is no shop, the nearest are in Chaloklum.
The reef is the point: one of the few places on the island to snorkel straight from the shore. Coral around the bay, parrotfish and wrasse; the inner reef is badly worn, it is better further out. Snorkelling boat trips from Chaloklum stop here too.
Getting there
About 11–12 km from Thong Sala, 30–40 minutes: via Chaloklum, with a steep concrete climb out of the village; concrete as far as Haad Khom, narrower and potholed beyond. There is no real car park: leave the scooter by the road or at Coral Bay and walk down two or three minutes by a path and steps. Parking a car is hard.
Good to know
- Water shoes are a must: stones and plenty of broken coral underfoot
- Do not stand or walk on the coral: it breaks the reef and cuts your feet; the current can carry you onto it on the way back
- Boat taxis to Bottle Beach leave from here, and the trails there start here too
