Tide today
Up to the coconut's eyes: mask on. The water is going out: low tide at 22:52.
Today: low tide at 22:52, high tide at 13:25.
UV index 6: high. The harsh sun is behind: the sand is fine.
The tide here
Low tide is the event of the day here. The water goes out 700 metres to a kilometre, the bay turns into wet sand flats with puddles, and you practically cannot reach swimming depth from the beach; locals come out to gather shells and small crabs. Swim only around high tide: the bay then fills up to the narrow strip of sand, though even then it is not deep. In some months the water hardly comes in during the day, so check the tide times on this page.
About the beach
A long, open bay on the west coast between Srithanu and Wok Tum: about two kilometres of narrow, yellowish sand. Palms lean over the water, and in places there are mangroves, replanted over the last few years. The bay's southern end is called Wok Tum, where the fishing boats are.
It is quiet and local here: Srithanu's yoga village is next door, and many people stay for months. Along the road by the beach are cafes, beach bars and restaurants, among them Castaway Beach Bar right by the sandbank; there are no sunbeds for rent. The beach faces west-south-west, towards the islands of Ang Thong Marine Park: from its southern half the sun sets into the sea all year, from the northern half it goes behind Srithanu's headland in summer.
Getting there
About 5 km north of Thong Sala pier along the coast road, 10–15 minutes by scooter. The beach runs a few metres from the road: you reach the water straight from the roadside or through the resorts.
Good to know
- Come at sunset at low tide: people walk far out on the sandbanks, which is where the photos of someone seemingly walking on water come from
- Stones and bits of coral on the bottom, and the water can be murky: water shoes help
- At high tide the water is shallow and calm, just right for small children
