Tide today

Waist-deep on the coconut. The water is going out: low tide at 20:47.

Today: low tide at 20:47, high tide at 12:26.

UV index 1: low. The harsh sun is behind: the sand is fine.

The tide here

The sandbar to Koh Ma comes out at low tide: ankle-deep or dry. At high tide the crossing is waist- to chest-deep, for confident swimmers only: if the water rises while you are on the islet, you swim back. Off the main beach there is no swimming at low tide: shallow and stony.

About the beach

A beach in the north-west facing the islet of Koh Ma. A sandbar about 200 metres long joins them: at low tide people walk across, at high tide it goes under. The reef around Koh Ma is the island's best-known snorkelling without a boat: the coral starts some thirty metres from the shore. Fishing in the waters around Koh Ma is banned.

There are a few restaurants, bars and resorts on the beach, massage and kayaks. Trees give shade in the middle and the north. The classic view of the sandbar is from the hill above the beach.

Getting there

About 14 km from Thong Sala via Chaloklum, 20–40 minutes; the road is paved and parking is free. You usually walk through Wang Sai Resort's cafe and over a footbridge, where they ask you to take your shoes off.

Good to know

  • Coarse sand, with stones and broken coral underfoot: water shoes are a must, especially on the sandbar and around Koh Ma
  • Plenty of sea cucumbers in the shallows: harmless, but unpleasant to step on
  • Snorkel at high tide on a calm day: at dead low tide it is too shallow and easy to scrape the coral
  • Do not stand on the coral or touch it
