Tide today

Waist-deep on the coconut. The water is going out: low tide at 20:47.

Today: low tide at 20:47, high tide at 12:26.

UV index 1: low. The harsh sun is behind: the sand is fine.

The tide here

The low tide shows here: the beach roughly doubles in width, and it is waist-deep only some 80–100 m out. Shallowest at the eastern end by Starlight, good for small children; deeper on the western side. You can swim at low tide too if you walk out.

About the beach

The southern and larger of Thong Nai Pan's bays: 800 metres to a kilometre of sand, open to the north-east. Quieter and simpler than Noi next door: bungalows and mid-range resorts, restaurants and bars by the water, massage, kayak rental, a 7-Eleven and shops in the village. A wide beach, often nearly empty.

The sand is firm and clean, with no coral or rocks where you swim, and the entry is gentle. No sunset over the sea here: it faces the sunrise.

Getting there

The same road as to Thong Nai Pan Noi: about 18 km from Thong Sala, paved, steep and winding in places, 35–45 minutes by scooter.

Good to know

  • Sunbeds are not rented on the sand: restaurants and resorts let their customers use theirs
  • Trees line the beach; there is more shade after lunch
  • Waves come mainly in the rainy season with strong wind, November to mid-January; on such days Yai gets more of them than Noi
  • Hardly any snorkelling: small fish by the rocks at the ends only
