Where to go out on Koh Phangan

The island’s bars, clubs and event spaces. The next evening at each is right in the list, from the calendar.

An evening needn't start with a party. Go out for food, music, or a night of dancing. Start with the kind of evening you want.

Piers, markets and everyday errands — and the venues where the island meets in the evening.

  1. Thong Sala · Market

    Phantip Market

Our pick · Dinner when nobody can agree on a cuisine

In Thong Sala, put dinner together from several stalls and meet without a reservation or a big plan. Everyone can choose their own food.

Phantip is a regular market. Saturday Walking Street is a separate outing, not the same market.

Thong Sala's main food market. It is open every day but comes alive towards evening, around five: rows of stalls in the yard and a covered hall with long shared tables next to them. Thai food (pad thai, som tam, curries, skewers, grilled fish, roti, mango sticky rice) sits alongside sushi, pizza, Israeli and Indian stalls. Fruit shakes everywhere.

  2. Thong Sala · Restaurant

    MESTO

Our pick · Go out for a particular gathering

Choose it when you want a gathering, class or performance to give the evening a purpose. Check the next announcement and pick a programme that interests you.

The programme changes. Follow the date and time in the agenda; inclusion here doesn't promise an event tonight.

Today · 20:00Musical jam with electronic instruments
  3. Ban Tai · Club

    Chill Up
  4. Ban Tai · Bar

    Reggae Sunset Bar

A small reggae-themed bar on a hillside above Ban Tai: hammocks and cushions, a view over the jungle to the sunset. Beer, cocktails, coconuts and simple food such as salads. Quiet and uncrowded; a resident dog greets guests.

  5. Ban Tai · Venue

    Tiki Beach

What kind of evening

On Koh Phangan you pick an evening by mood more than by map: till sunrise between the neighbouring bars' speakers, on a dance floor without a drop of alcohol, or just over dinner at a market. Each place's row in the list says what is on there next.

A big beach party. The Full Moon Party is on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) on the night of the full moon; when that falls on a Buddhist holy day, when no alcohol is sold, it moves to the next night. From nine in the evening to sunrise, busiest from midnight to three. Entry is 200 baht in cash at the beach for a wristband; there are no advance tickets. Every bar on the beach has its own sound system. On the month's other nights Haad Rin's bars stay open: Drop In and Cactus draw the biggest crowds, with fire shows most nights in the season.

A festival in the jungle. Halfmoon in Ban Tai runs every two weeks, about a week before and a week after the Full Moon: a night in the Magic Forest from 21:30–22:00 to sunrise, ticketed, with stages rather than bars. Strictly 20+, and the name on your ID must match the ticket. Jungle Experience is in the jungle a kilometre off the Ban Tai road, usually the night before the Full Moon: also 20+, until six in the morning, with a Muay Thai ring between the dance floors.

Without alcohol. Srithanu is the island's centre of yoga and practices, and its evenings are quiet. Ecstatic dance here is sober: no alcohol, no talking on the floor, phones away, everyone barefoot. The best-known one, RISE at Pyramid, is on Sunday daytime — on this island you can dance yourself out before lunch.

Food and a stroll. In Thong Sala the Phantip market by the pier is open every evening, and on Saturdays, from about four to ten, the street by the pier closes to traffic for the Walking Street: food, clothes, souvenirs. Chaloklum has its evening market on Sundays, along the main street and the pier, with seafood from the village's boats.

Quiet. Thong Nai Pan and Chaloklum have the island's calmest evenings: beachfront restaurants and resort bars.

Getting back. Grab and Bolt are not reliable here. Songthaews thin out after dark, especially to remote beaches, and run late mainly on big party nights; agree the fare before you get in, it goes up after midnight. After drinking, not on a scooter: there are often police checkpoints on the road to Haad Rin.

At the Full Moon. Buckets are stronger than they taste: watch yours being made and don't take drinks from strangers. Don't jump the fire rope. Don't swim drunk or after dark — people have drowned here. Wear shoes: there can be glass in the sand. Thailand's drug laws are strict, and police, plain-clothes officers among them, work the party.
