Piers, markets and everyday errands — and the venues where the island meets in the evening.

  1. Thong Sala · Pier

    Thong Sala Pier

The island's main gateway by sea. Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery catamarans come in from Samui, Koh Tao and the mainland (Donsak and Surat Thani); Raja ferries from Donsak; Songserm boats from Samui and Koh Tao. Only Raja carries cars and scooters.

  2. Ban Tai · Temple

    Wat Khao Tham

A temple on a hill above Ban Tai, looking over the south coast to Samui; people come up for the sunset too. It is known as a place of meditation: for many years it ran ten-day vipassana courses for foreigners. The centre's website no longer works, and we could not confirm whether the courses still run.

  3. Ban Tai · Temple

    Wat Pho

A temple in Ban Tai known above all for its herbal steam room. The abbot started it in the early 2000s: herbs, lemongrass among them, are boiled in a wood-fired cauldron and the steam is piped into separate rooms for men and women. Massage is offered on site after the steam.

Where to start

The two best-known places inland stand side by side, in Than Sadet – Koh Phangan National Park. Phaeng Waterfall is not one wall of water but a staircase of cascades in the jungle, and the rains decide how much water it has. Fifteen minutes up steps and roots from its foot is the Domsila viewpoint, with Koh Samui in view on a clear day. One ticket covers both: 100 baht, 50 for children, cash, roughly 8:30 to 16:30.

Khao Ra is the island's highest mountain, about 630 metres. The trail is three kilometres of jungle and two to three hours up; the last kilometre is nearly a climb. On a cloudy day there is no point: the summit sits in the cloud.

Guidebooks call Wat Phu Khao Noi near Thong Sala the island's oldest temple: its white stupa is dated to the 15th century, and entry is free. The Chinese shrine of Guan Yin on the road to Chaloklum is red walls and golden dragons in tiers up the slope; about 40 baht is asked at the door. And across the road from Wat Pho in Ban Tai a herbal steam sauna opens at one in the afternoon, about 120 baht: a way to sweat even more on a tropical island, with lemongrass at least.

At temples, cover shoulders and knees and take your shoes off before going into the buildings.
